THURSDAY, 14 APRIL 鈥� The effort to achieve gender equality in our daily life does not only rests on women alone, but is the responsibility of all parties, from small family units to managing a bigger one such as administrating the government.

This effort can be achieved through an early step of understanding or the awareness of gender and gender perspectives in all levels of society.

This was emphasised by the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Hajah Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Ahmad Ayid, who stressed that the understanding of the matter was particularly important in making decisions or implement certain policies with regard to the assessment of gender perspective.

鈥淥rdinary people, both men and women, children or adults need to understand that due to the biological and social factors, men and women have obvious differences, as such, each needs and wants are not the same,鈥� she said.

鈥淭hus, when any policy is passed, there should be an understanding on the impact of these policies to the lives of either men or women.

鈥淥nly by making the gender issue a a point of reference in the formulation of public policy, then only will we be able to achieve or move a step forward in gender equality issues,鈥� she said.

She said this when officiating at the 2^nd International Conference on Asean Women with the theme 鈥楪ender Mainstreaming and Public Policy鈥� held at Promenade Hotel yesterday.

She added that in a family for example, gender equality should be practiced in our everyday life, such as equal opportunity or freedom to all boys and girls to choose their interests or voice their opinions.

鈥淐hildren must be taught to respect each other since childhood, and when they grow up with such practices, they would be more sensitive to gender issues,鈥� she added.

She also hoped that throughout the conference, problems related to this issue would be discussed more thoroughly.

THURSDAY, 14 APRIL 鈥� The Students Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) of USIA-1Borneo 麻豆视频 (UMS) Residential College recently organised a motivational programme for students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Elopura Bestari, Sandakan.

Themed 鈥淕o on, Do it Now鈥�, the motivation programme conducted by 23 students of USIA-1Borneo Residential College including its principal, Sidah Idris and two fellow advisors was participated by 34 students of form four and five of the school.

The two-day programme was aimed at guiding students in personal and spiritual development.

Through this programme, participants were exposed to soft skills, besides activities that aimed to instill in them a competitive nature so as not to give up easily when faced with obstacles and shortcomings.

The programme was also supported by the principal of SMK Elopura Bestari, Hajah Kalsom Abd Aziz who hoped that such programme be continuously organised in future. 鈥� (fl)

A total of 40 participants involved comprising secondary school students of Sekolah Menengah (SM) Sains Sabah, SM Sains Lahad Datu, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Agama Kota Kinabalu, SMK Agama Tun Ahmadshah, SMK Agama Tun Said Kota Belud and Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Kota Kinabalu.

According to the Academic Exco of KKTM JAKMAS, Harun Pasi, the programme was the best medium for debaters to gain knowledge and experience in strengthening their respective school debating team.

Meanwhile, for Principal of KKTM, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin, such programme should be continued in the future as it could be beneficial to secondary school students who were active in public speaking or oratory activities, and help to improve the participants鈥� leadership skills.

The three-day programme included talks, team strategy, group activities, and watching of videos on debating. 鈥� (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 13 APRIL 鈥� The Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) Corporate Relations Exco Tun Mustapha Residential College (KKTM) recently organised a ICT Literacy and Organisation Management Workshop.

The Workshop held at Dewan Mini Karisma Tun Mustapha College involved 100 participants comprising those from the Secretariat of the KKTM Students Committee.

The workshop aimed at giving students the opportunity to learn the basics in organisational management and the use of ICT.

The programme was also seen to improve the quality of students with the basics of ICT use and expose them to organisation management including writing of paperwork for a programme.

The workshop was conducted by invited guests, Jakaria Dasan and Oscar Gordon Wong and was officiated by the Principal of KKTM, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazaruddin.

According to him, this programme would benefit students as they were to excel not only in academics but also to learn soft skills while studying at UMS.

鈥淪uch programme will continue to be organised in future so that students could apply what they have learned and acquired in their daily life and after graduating,鈥� he said.

He also proposed that a publicity unit be set up in line with the aim of the workshop, as a way of applying what they had learned in the workshop. - (fl)
