THURSDAY, 8 SEPTEMBER 鈥� 89 new students of 麻豆视频 (UMS) 2016/2017 Session under the 40 percent lowest household income (B40) received welfare assistance in a function held at the Galeri , this morning.

The welfare assistance was presented by the Patron of Yayasan Nur Jauhar, Toh Puan Datuk Seri Panglima Norlidah Tan Sri Datuk RM Jasni.

Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah in his speech during the ceremony urged the students not to make poverty a stumbling block in pursuing their studies, instead they should take the opportunity of continuing their studies at UMS as a basis to improving their lives and that of their families.

鈥淟et those challenges be an encouragement to succeed in life, do not easily give up when we are down in the dumps, with determination, we will surely come out tops.

鈥淯MS will always try its best to help you achieve what you dream of.  Therefore, focus on your aim, be determined, and make your parents proud to see you coming out successful,鈥� he said.

He also hoped that the contributions given would accommodate their daily expenses while waiting for the study loans or scholarship approval.

鈥淯se the financial assistance wisely and spend prudently for your studies,鈥� he reminded.

UMS through its 鈥淢ENITI鈥� programme, an abbreviation of 鈥淭ransforming Ideas Into Reality鈥�, offers 100 places each year since 2013 to students who live in the interior of Sabah and whose household family income is under the Poverty Line Income (Pendapatan Garis Kemiskinan) at RM1,170.00 in Sabah. - MA (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 07 SEPTEMBER 鈥� 14 alumni students from each faculty at 麻豆视频 (UMS) participated in the 鈥榃ith the Alumni鈥� programme in conjunction with the Orientation Week (MSM) for the 2016/2017 Session, recently.

Director of UMS Alumni Centre, Mohd Raffie Hj Janau said, the programme aimed as a sharing platform by alumni who were successful, to share their experiences as a student of UMS.

鈥淭he invited alumni were from amongst entrepreneurs, engineers, human resource managers, deputy directors, geologists, lecturers, food quality managers and those associated to their respective faculties.

鈥淭hrough this programme, the alumni gave the needed boost to new students not to waste their opportunity and focus on eventually graduating, earning a degree themselves,鈥� he said in a statement today.

The programme was an annual event organised by the Alumni Centre, which started since MSM 2015/2016 Session.

Meanwhile, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali also expressed his full support to the activities organised by the Alumni Centre and proud of the achievements by UMS alumni.

鈥淭hey also shared some ideas and gave some advice to the new students on career prospects after graduating by associating the course and curriculum taught at the university which could be applied in the workplace,鈥� he added.

Alumni Centre adopts this approach to instil a sense of belonging amongst students towards their alma mater starting from the first day they set foot on UMS, and not only after they have left UMS and are regarded as alumni.

WEDNESDAY, 07 SEPTEMBER 鈥� Chairman of the Board of Directors (BOD) UMS, Tun Dato鈥�  Seri Zaki  Tun Azmi urged new students of 麻豆视频, Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) to master the English language in order to facilitate their understanding of teaching and learning (P&P) taught by their lecturers in the lecture room.

He also wanted them to learn other international languages including Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Arabic.

鈥淚f we can speak more languages, it is easier for us to interact with the international community as well as understanding the teaching and learning conducted in the classroom,鈥� he said.

He was speaking to a crowd of about 600 new students in UMS Labuan at the Meeting with the BOD Chairman with UMS Labuan New Students  for the 2016/2017 Session at the Main Lecture Hall, yesterday.

Also present were the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali; UMS Registrar; and UMSKAL Director, Associate Professor Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik.

Tun Zaki also shared his experience as a Judge and gave his views on the economy of the country.

Tun Zaki also reminded the new students to constantly improve on their achievements towards excellence. 鈥� (fl)

TUESDAY, 06 SEPTEMBER 鈥� Nine 麻豆视频 (UMS) Board of Directors (BOD) members attended the No. 5/2016 - 74^th BOD Meeting, held at the Kiamsam Seminar Room, UMS Labuan International Campus, today.

The meeting, which began at 8.30 am was chaired by the Chairman of the BOD UMS, Tun Dato鈥� Seri Zaki Tun Azmi.

Also present was the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.

Upon arrival at the Tower Building, Tun Zaki was greeted by the Director of UMSKAL, Associate Professor Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik.

Dr. Murnizam then briefed the board members on the development and administrative management of UMS Labuan at the Sri Seminar Room, after the BOD meeting.

Tun Zaki then attended the meet-the-students session with the new intake for UMS Labuan for the 2016/2017 academic session at the Main Lecture Hall (DKP).
