Connie Pearl Suil of Utusan Borneo said UMS efforts are timely in sustaining our forests for our future generations.

For Therence Voo from New Sabah Times, forest conservation was important in reducing global warming which was a concern of the world community.

Sin Chew Daily reporter, Lau Siew Mei said the World Forestry Day celebration organised by the School of International Tropical Forestry (SPTA) UMS was seen capable in educating the public especially students about the importance of forest care.

He said it would instill the love for the environment and refrain from any activity that could destroy the natural wildlife.

All of them took part in the planting of trees as a sign of support for the conservation and preservation of forests. -SS (fl)

The programme which is an initiative of the Student Council (MPP) will start at 7.00 pm until 10.00 pm with a line up of interesting items.

According to the President of MPP, Mohd Juhar Harun, the items include an interview which will be conducted by the nation’s nasyid advocates, Hafiz Hamidun and Fitri Harris.

“They will touch on the topic ‘Between Love and Ambition’ besides presenting some nasyid songs,” he said.

Juhar said that the organising of this programme among others was a way to instil a knowledgeable culture while entertaining in a healthy way among the students.

‘A Step to the Ivory Tower’ Attracted Huge Crowd in Sandakan/v5/ms/discover-link-3/863-program-selangkah-ke-menara-gading-gegarkan-sandakan/v5/ms/discover-link-3/863-program-selangkah-ke-menara-gading-gegarkan-sandakanSDKpicSATURDAY, 6 APRIL – The educational tour programme ‘A Step to the Ivory Tower’ attracted a huge crowd at this eastern part of Sabah after making stopovers across the districts of Kota Marudu, Penampang, Beaufort and Tuaran.

The programme organised by the Student Affairs Department (HEP), 鶹Ƶ (UMS) received overwhelming response as can be seen at their booth at Harbour Mall Sandakan.

More than 500 people comprising parents and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) school leavers including matriculation and diploma holders visited the booth to obtain further details about UMS and its courses.

A total of 14 exhibition booths took part in this programme which include the Sandakan Municipal Council, Royal Malaysian Police, Takaful Malaysia, Tabung Haji, Bank Rakyat, National Anti-Dadah Agency, Labour Department and the Sandakan Industrial Training Institute.

A talk on enrolment to undergraduate courses and science foundation course were also conducted. Visitors were also briefed on the comprehensive range of postgraduate courses offered by UMS. The educational tour programme was officiated by the Director of Alumni Centre UMS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmud Sudin.

Deputy Director of UMSKAL, Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal said ‘Campus Survival’ UMSKAL 2014 was also to prepare new undergraduates to face life as a university student.

In addition, students can also learn to adapt to the new environment and learn to be independent without depending on others and build a positive character and have self-confidence in facing challenges as undergrads.

‘Campus Survival’ Programme was to develop high level communication skills when dealing with others and to be able to build a strong identity as an undergrad and to provide opportunities to first year undergrads to be active in various fields and not to rely solely on academic,” he said.

He said this when launching the closing ceremony of the programme at the Labuan Sports Complex recently.

A total of 54 participants joined the programme held for the third time with the motto ‘Campus Life is the Best’. – SS (fl)

‘Demi’, a Gift for Independence Month to UMS and Malaysia/v5/ms/discover-link-3/1067-demi-hadiah-bulan-kemerdekaan-kepada-ums-dan-malaysia/v5/ms/discover-link-3/1067-demi-hadiah-bulan-kemerdekaan-kepada-ums-dan-malaysiaDN UMSFRIDAY, 01 AUGUST – The song entitled ‘Demi’ sung by the 1998 Winner of the Programme Sinaran Pasport Kegemilangan, Dayang Noraini will be aired on all government and private radio and television stations nationwide starting 4 August 2014 in celebrating the Independence Day.
 
The orchestral version of the latest music video of this Sabah-born singer was also successfully recorded recently involving nearly 60 musicians consisting of lecturers and students of the Music Programme, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) 鶹Ƶ (UMS).
 
According to Dayang, who is an undergrad with the Faculty of Psychology and Education undertaking Teaching of English as a Second Language Programme, filming of the music video was fully recorded at UMS stadium and considered as a gift to UMS in celebrating the independence month and 20 years of UMS establishment.
 
“I am grateful for the recording went smoothly and we received full cooperation and support from the university,” he said.
 
She also felt fortunate that the recording of the music video produced by the Music Programme, FKSW was given a helping hand by composers Roslee Haji Wahid, Andrew Poninting; Head of Music Programme UMS, Resot Iggau and popular Sabah videographer, Charles Phang.
 
The music video recording ‘Demi’ orchestral version incorporates a variety of the finest musical instrument such as violoncello, cymbals, timpani, flute, trombone, piano, drums, violin, guitar, trumpets and several other musical instruments. – ZMD (fl)

‘DemiMu Malaysia’ Uplifts UMS’ Name/v5/ms/discover-link-3/548-demimu-malaysia-angkat-nama-ums/v5/ms/discover-link-3/548-demimu-malaysia-angkat-nama-umsorkestra 4WEDNESDAY, 18 JUNE – ‘DemiMu Malaysia’, a work done entirely by UMS became one of the songs that will be played on radio and television channels operated by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) in conjunction with the Merdeka month in August.

When approached, lyricist and composer of the song, Roslee Hj. Wahid said, it indirectly became a catalyst for him to keep composing to bring UMS’ name to national level.

Roslee was one of seven composers selected by RTM to produce a patriotic song to celebrate the month of independence this year.

“This is an honour for UMS especially for the UMS student orchestra, which will be directly involved in the production of its audio and video before being submitted to RTM,” he said.

Roslee who is also a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage UMS also disclosed that about 75 musicians made up of undergrads and alumni of UMS would be engaged in the production of the song ‘DemiMu Malaysia’.

He added that at least 24 different musical instruments would be used to produce the song in various versions,which included violoncello, cymbals, timpani, flute, trombone, piano, drums, violin, guitar and trumpet.

“Dayang Noraini is one of UMS’ students, we take this opportunity to feature her as the main vocalist of this song,” he said adding that this local artist had won the ‘Sinaran Passport Kegemilangan’ singing competition in 1998.

Asked about the challenges faced while producing the song in various versions, he said that the production cost was the major challenge for him.

“We welcome sponsorship from any interested parties who wants to get involved in the making of ‘DemiMu Malaysia’, he added.

The song ‘DemiMu Malaysia’ will be re-recorded by RTM and will be broadcast in different versions such as Simfoni Orkestra, Accapella, Big Band and acoustic vocal accompanied by piano. – ZMD (fl)

According to the UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali, the programme is one of the efforts to instil the students’ sense of belonging and love to UMS Campus.

“In line with the Vice-Chancellor Message, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah wants every student to have a sense of belonging. He also urges the students to create a conducive and harmony campus,” he said after the programme.

According to Ismail, what they have done in the programme is to clean out the college surrounding area including the drainage and water reservoir.

He also said that they are also concentrating on the cleanliness in every level and block of the college residential especially the toilet.

This programme involved 4,000 students as part as an awareness on the dengue situation and as a support to the campaign against dengue,” he added.

According to a statement issued by UHEIM, the event will begin at 4.30 pm with the recitation of ‘Selawat Barakat Makkiyah’ by about 200 students of Tahfiz al-Quran and Pusat Latihan Dakwah Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM).

The event, organised in conjunction with the celebration of Maulidur Rasul UMS level also included a talk on ‘Hakikat Ittaba’ which will be presented by Maulana Razif Abd Wahab.

In addition, the programme will also have a lecture and ‘Ijazat Kitab Barakaat Makkiyah’ by religious scholars from Pakistan, Syeikh Muhammad Zubair Ruhani Bazi and Syeikh Muhammad Zuhair Ruhani Bazi.

The team beat ‘Asal Boleh’ with 15-11, 12-15, 16-14 before beating ‘Gila-Gila Regu’ 15-12, 16-14. By beating these two teams at the semi-finals which adopted the league concept, the winner which comprises Sharif Idrus Abdul Taib, Syafiq Edul and Mihammad Fakhrullah Abdul Muda received a trophy, medals and hamper.

1st Runner-up was ‘Gila-Gila Regu’ whilst ‘Asal Boleh’ 2nd Runner-up. Each team received the championship medals for their feat. The prize giving was done by UMS Youth and Sports Assistant, Douglas Eric Elisa Tar.

Besides Sepak Takraw which involved 12 teams, various sports activities were also organised. Among them were futsal, netball and volleyball. The good weather adds up to the fine performance by our UMS students.

The organising of this championship among others was aimed at giving opportunities to UMS students to be active in sporting activities and a ground to uncover new talents that can be included in major sporting events. It was also a step to cultivate healthy lifestyle through sports and recreation. – FL

‘Jejak Alumni’ Programme Reach Out to UMS Alumni/v5/ms/discover-link-3/1098-program-jejak-alumni-dekati-alumni-ums/v5/ms/discover-link-3/1098-program-jejak-alumni-dekati-alumni-umsTHURSDAY, 5 FEBRUARY – The Alumni Centre 鶹Ƶ (UMS) remains committed in reaching out to the university’s alumni through various programmes organised.

Recently, the centre had initiated the ‘Jejak Alumni’ programme by visiting all UMS graduates around Sabah.

According to the centre’s Director, Mohd. Raffie Janau, the visits were intended to ensure contacts between UMS and its alumni are always strengthened besides looking into areas for cooperation.

“We are targeting to reach 50,000 alumni and that they are always in touch with the university.  We have various other plans that require contribution of ideas and views of the alumni,” he said, describing that the programme will be extended to Peninsular Malaysia and most likely overseas as well.

He was speaking to media after the visits to some UMS alumni around Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
